Adapted to most of North America east of the Rockies; grows to 6'; best adapted to deep, moist, fertile soils, lowlands; rhizomatous; moderate salinity and shade tolerance; tolerant of high water tables and occasional flooding; reacts favorably to burning; often associated with Little Bluestem and Indiangrass; bluish purple hue in the summer months.

Drill seeded at 1/4' – 1' deep at 10–15 pounds PLS/acre alone, or 7 pounds PLS/acre in mixtures (use 50–100% more seed if broadcast seeding). 130,000 seeds/pound.

Germination in 28 days, late spring.

Varieties
Kaw and Pawnee – developed as late maturing, strongly rhizomatous varieties for the central states.
