Native to the Great Plains of North America; adapted throughout the transition zone and warmer climates; grows to <1’, dioecious; well suited to dry, well drained, medium to fine textured soils; stoloniferous; some use as turfgrass, perhaps canopy is too open for sports turf; native stands associated with Western Wheatgrass and Blue Grama.

Drill seeded at 3–5 pounds of burr seed PLS/acre. 56,000 seeds/pound in burr. Higher seeding rates for turf use (to 3–5 pounds/1,000 ft 2)

Germination in 14–21 days, late spring to late summer.
