New York Harbor: Bayonne Golf Club is a waterfront course that emulates the amazing links flavor found in Great Britain and Ireland. There are incredible views of the surrounding area, especially the Manhattan skyline. Bayonne selected the same grass species found on links so not only the looks but the playing quality would be the same. They depended on Seed Research of Oregon to supply varieties of these species that could withstand the environmental rigors of the site. The fairways are colonial bentgrass with fine fescues, roughs are endophyte-infected fine fescues and the greens are a unique blend of creeping and velvet bentgrass.
Sculpted from a sand and gravel pit, the course superintendent selected grasses with environmental and aesthetic desires at the forefront. The links style utilized fine fescues for the rough and colonial bentgrass/fine fescue for the fairway with velvet bentgrass greens and tees. The low maintenance aspects of the SR 7200 velvet bentgrass with playing quality was so impressive it has since been incorporated into the fairways as well. The species and cultivars of grass selected enable reduced inputs of fertilizer, fungicides and water with superior performance on this unique gold course.
The superintendents at Desert Mountain are specialists at growing grass in the unique environment of the Southwest. They are faced with heat of summer, dryness throughout most of the year, humidity during the summer monsoons, frosts of the winter and heavy salt buildup from their water supply. They chose Seed Research's bengrasses because they are so widely adapted and meet all of theer greens requirements. They also depend on Seed Research ryegrasses for overseeding to provide the winter color and wear tolerance required on all their courses.
